JPMorgan's Payments Outlook for the Middle East and Africa projects a $1.5 trillion digital payments economy in Africa by 2030, with 64 billion-plus annual instant payments. It also estimates 13x growth in fintech sector revenues between 2021 and 2030.
Bank-issued projections on African payments volumes set benchmarks that investors and fintech operators will use, though the report is not Africa-only.
The CBN approved the nomination of Adedapo Olagunju, who has led JPMorgan's West African operations since 2018, as managing director of the proposed Nigerian merchant bank. The appointment is tied to the approval-in-principle for the new subsidiary.
The Central Bank of Nigeria granted approval-in-principle for JPMorgan Merchant Bank Nigeria Limited. JPMorgan has since deposited N50 billion with the CBN, a key requirement of its merchant banking licence application.
