About The Africa Banking Brief
The Africa Banking Brief is a daily briefing on banking in Africa: acquisitions, financings, regulation, senior appointments, results, and the reports that explain them. Each story is summarized in the site’s own words and links to the original reports.
What it covers
Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Egypt, Morocco, Ghana and Ethiopia; the WAEMU and CEMAC monetary unions; Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Angola and Mozambique; and stories about the continent as a whole. Stories from other African markets appear when they are significant.
How stories are found and chosen
Every morning, a program searches news outlets, regulators’ announcements and news feeds, in English, French, Portuguese and Arabic, for the previous day’s banking news. An AI model reads the results, sets aside items that are out of scope or out of date, merges reports of the same event, and drafts a headline and summary for each story.
The editor reviews every story before it is published. Stories are ranked by how much they matter to investors and others who follow the sector, so news from a large bank in a large market ranks above the same news from a small one. The day’s highest-ranked stories appear as top stories.
Figures and dates
Amounts are shown in US dollars, converted at the reference exchange rate for the date of the event and rounded. A story’s date is the day it was first reported. Dates and times are London time.
